Overview
Hialeah Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a 276-bed skilled nursing facility, implemented WellAir's portable air disinfection devices, the Protect 200 and Protect 900, in selected areas. This study compares the total number of repeat infections, nosocomial C. difficile infections, and nosocomial respiratory infections before and after implementation of the units, which use WellAir's patented NanoStrike™ technology. A 28-month review was conducted to evaluate the results.
Methodology
A Nurse Risk Manager Consultant with RB Health Partners, Inc. visited the nursing home for two days to abstract information and review the data. The periods selected for aggregate pre- and post-review were a four-month period prior to the implementation and the same four-month period two years later. Comparison of like periods reduces the risk of skewed data related to seasonal variances.
Results
In the period after implementation of the Protect 200 and Protect 900 units in selected areas, the total number of repeat infections at the short and long term rehabilitation facility decreased from 16 to 10, a 37.50% reduction.
The total number of nosocomial C. difficile infections decreased from 11 to 0, a 100% reduction.
The total number of nosocomial respiratory infections decreased from 42 to 28, a 33.33% reduction.
