OVERVIEW
Canterbury Tower, a 60-bed continuing care retirement community, implemented WellAir's portable air disinfection devices, the Protect 900, in the hallways, dining room, and activity area. Four months later, they began implementing bedside WellAir Protect 200 devices for each new admission, readmission, and any residents identified with any type of infection. This study compares the total number of respiratory nosocomial infections and infection rates before and after each implementation of the units, which use WellAir's patented NanoStrike™ technology. A 35-month review was conducted to evaluate the results of implementation.
METHODOLOGY
A Nurse Risk Manager Consultant with RB Health Partners, Inc. visited the facility for two days to abstract information and review the data. The periods selected for initial pre- and post-review were the full year prior to the initial WellAir Protect 900 implementation and the following full year of implementation. Comparison of like periods reduces the risk of skewed data related to seasonal variances.
RESULTS
In the 12-month period after the initial implementation of the Protect 900 units in shared areas, the total number of nosocomial respiratory infections at Canterbury Tower decreased from 31 in year one to 24 in year two, a 22.58% reduction.
In the 7-month period after implementation of the individual Protect 200 units in targeted patient rooms, the total number of nosocomial respiratory infections decreased from 15 in year one to 1 in year three, a 93.33% reduction.
